What are the different types of proofs?

PREPRESS PROOFS

Analog Proofs – Hard proofs because they are printed on paper or other material.
Contact Proofs – A contact proof is a type of monochrome prepress proof. Bluelines and Velox are common types of inexpensive contact proofs. A contact proof is generally (though not always) meant primarily to show layout and copy.
Blueline – Usually inexpensive, photographic proof from negatives where all colors are shown in blue (or another color) is called a blueline.
Color Proofs – Also known as Colorkey or Laminate Proofs. These proofs are created from the film separations that places each ink color on a separate clear acetate sheet or film material then either stacked together in alignment (registered) over paper stock or laminated together.

Digital Proofs
Hard Proofs – A color prepress proofing method where a job is printed from the digital file using inkjet, color lasler, dye sublimation or thermal wax print technologies to give a good approximation of what the final printed piece will look like. The digital proof is generally less expensive than other prepress proofs. Digital proofs can often be produced on the actual paper stock of the job adding another element of accuracy. They aren’t as accurate for checking trapping and identifying moire problems as overlay and laminate proofs.
Soft Proofs – Also known as PDF or Monitor Proofs are image displayed on a video monitor to visually simulate the expected printing results. It can not be used for exact color matching since it employs the RGB color spectrum of your monitor. It is useful for reviewing content and color breaks.

PRESS PROOF

Used on press checks, it is a proof from the printing press, plates, and actual inks specified for the job. A press proof is used to verify images, tone values, colors, and imposition. Because it involves setting up the job and running a proof on the actual paper to be used, it is normally done with the designer on-site (and sometimes your customer as well). It’s your last chance to get it right and can add additional cost to the job.

Make sure your digital proof is PDF ready to print file (print pdf file) when you place your order on www.colorfxweb.com.

Limitations to print on the spine of a perfect bind cover

On a perfect bound or double loop cover, you may print the entire area of thespine, but be sure to consult with us beforehand. You’ll need to measure the spine using a bulking dummy to be sure of the exact width. Ink coverage that traps to scoresor bleeds across the spine will also need close attention to ensure proper registrationand to avoid cracking. In addition, perfect bound books will need four scores on the cover [two backbone plus two hinge] for durability and to protect any glued areas when opening. The paper you choose is also a consideration for perfect bind books; text and cover pages must be parallel with the spine or the covers may wrinkle.

An Amazing Effect for Your Designs

Reticulating Varnish

Reticulating Varnish changes the texture of the paper from fine to coarse. It looks like sand on a beach pebbled finish.
A perfect pattern image trap can be achieved by the application of a special dull varnish followed by an overall application of a gloss coating. A chemical reaction occurs that neutralizes the gloss in the areas previously dull varnished.

There are many ways to achieve textured and pattern areas in your packaging through paper selection or embossing, but did you know that you can create raised patterns through the use of varnish and coatings?

Through a process called reticulating coating or “chemical embossing” Thoro can make your graphic images jump off your cartons. Much like the strike-through technique, also known as contrast varnish, a perfect pattern image trap can be achieved by the spot/pattern application of a special matte or dull varnish followed by an overall application of a gloss coating. A chemical reaction occurs that neutralizes the gloss in the areas previously varnished with the matte/dull varnish. To achieve a raised, reticulating effect, the same application of contrasting dull/glossy varnish is used to define the pattern; but with increased viscosity of the coatings, the chemical reaction causes the varnish to bead and leave a perfectly registered, visible pattern with true dimension.

This contrasting raised, precise coating effect creates a visual and textured feel special effect that is perfectly suited for emphasizing images of products with their own natural texture and dimension. For instance, an image of leather, fabric, fruits and vegetables, patterns on intricate technology and medical devices can all come to life on your package by adding a reticulating coating effect.

Reticulating coating can be applied to any process or spot color print area, but because of the dramatic gloss/dull contrast, application on a darker, or solid-color background is often more dramatic. Using a reticulating coating as opposed to a pattern emboss or textured paper is a style choice that should be made based on the desired end look, job quantities and budget.
